Yeep HA! The thinking shop lept in the Technorati rankings overnight. I had been at just over 600,000 before I got the new domain name, registered the new name with Technorati, and ended up over 710,000 for my efforts. From that point last night to this morning Dr. Jim’s lept to 459,138! Time for a celebration!
Of course, if you give it a click, it will get bigger.

As is our custom, such happy happenings require some music, and since Dr. Jim is now a big fan of female jazz vocalists, that means I feature another SLINKY JAZZ BABE on the old blog. AND, just because it was a jolly great jump the Thinking Shop took, I will throw in a SLINKY BLUES BABE, TOO!
Dr. Jim really doesn’t know a lot about jazz. I grew up listening to the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, The Who, and Mott the Hoople (remember them?), Eric Clapton and so forth, not to mention some a few years in the punk thing, e.g., the Clash and The Dead Boys (never really liked the Sex Pistols), then I started getting interested in bluesy rock, then blues and recently jazz. Ever since I got a decent stereo, my tastes in music has changed again. I can hear nuances in familiar albums I’ve never noticed before, and jazz and non-electric music sounds so much richer than the stuff I usually listened to. And female jazz singers tend to have marvelous voices. And I still like the blues.

We have already featured Sophie Milman and Larra Skye, so who else have I been listenting to a lot lately?
Well, there is Jessica Lalonde, a Canadian whose album Spinning Daydreams has a great selection of standards like Taking a Chance on Love and On a Slow Boat to China. Her website lets you listen for free.
Here is one of the videos from her website, too.

The slinky black dress seems to be standard for SJBs, and who the heck am I to complain?
OK, it isn’t all black, it has some red in it. Sue me.

There, almost all black. Happy now?

Little Miss Higgins was born in Alberta (yay!!!) but now lived in Nokomis Saskatchewan.
You can hear a whole mess of her tunes here.
Here is review from none other than the Lethbridge Herald about a performance (I missed) at the Slice.
LETHBRIDGE HERALD:
November 14th Show: Dirty Ol Tractor Tour 2008
The pride of Nokomis, Sask., Little Miss Higgins, aka Jolene Higgins and Foy Taylor had a packed house at the Slice on Nov. 14. They have been a busy couple since playing at the Lethbridge Folk Club’s Wolf’s Den earlier this year.

In addition to non-stop touring, their second CD “Junction City” has picked up a Western Canadian Music Award for outstanding blues album at this year’s ceremonies in Edmonton, Oct. 17-19.
“It’s also been nominated for a Juno award, so being nominated wasn’t a surprise but we were sure surprised to win it. It’s so cool,” said Higgins after a soundcheck before their Nov. 14 performance at the Slice.
They played a couple of excellent sets of jazz-tinged original blues music with the odd Memphis Minnie and W.C Handey cover, St. Louis Blues, for good measure.
The duo has been all over Western Canada since their last Lethbridge visit, but Higgins is looking forward to performing in Massey Hall, Nov. 28 as part of the Toronto Blues Society’s Women in Blues performance which also includes Suzie Vinnick. Then they will hole up in Nokomis to work on material for a new CD hopefully to be released in 2010.

Junction City is a great album. I have her live album (recorded in Calgary and Saskatoon) too.
Jazz in black, blues in red…

Little Miss Higgins will next be in Lethbridge on October 4 at the Geomatic Attic.
Now, lest you be confused and befuddled, let’s get one thing straight. Little Miss Higgins is NOT the million selling songstress Missy Higgins who is from Australia. It is easy to confuse them since Missy H. also has a red dress.
Now, how the hell is anyone supposed to keep this all straight?
