Badges for Secular Bible Blogs: Get ‘em before they’re hot!
Posted on October 19, 2009 at 7:19 pm by Dr. Jim
A few people have noticed that the Thinking Shop has been sporting a “Secular Bible Blog” badge the past few days. Some wanted one. Some stole it.
It was made by my friend Tom Robinson from a photo we found of a DSS. Well, the rough draft has been refined and Tom sent me two more prototypes. We tried getting text onto the scroll but it didn’t look so good when the image was shrunk to badge size (the images above are not quite square, 199×207 pixels).
This is the one I’m going for: it is just easier to read.
If you have a secular blog and sometimes try to write something reasonably educated (higher degrees NOT necessary) about the Bible, biblical scholarship, the history or religion of ancient Israel (and cognate disciplines), please feel free to use the badge, but just let me know.

I need one that says “Dilettante Secular Bible Blog,” since I’m talking out of my ass half the time, not being an ACTUAL Bible expert.
Someday I’ll reveal my real area of expertise!

Ooh, a membership badge. Is there a secret decoder ring too? May I have an honorary membership? I do try, with various degrees of success try to write something that sounds as if I’m reasonably educated about a variety of stuff.

What about those of us secretly secular? Can we have an invisible version to post, proudly knowing it’s there while others can’t see it?

Done. You can copy and paste it from right here:

Looks fantastic — I hope to fulfill the requirements.
Could you make us a real nice homepage for the badge – so we can link a URL there.
Maybe you could find a brilliant Secular Bible Scholar to run a website dedicated to such a cause with perhaps links to post from member sites when they do secular bible posts.
Just an idea. Then you could do something the best 50 of Secular Bible Blogs.

All in good time! I will try to keep track of who uses the badge, but I do want to keep the badge separate from a Secular Bible Scholars Club, or whatever.

Thank you. I have used it here: Replacing Religion.

Jim, Not a lot, but there is some. Not a lot of traffic on the blog, but a few supportive emails, unfortunately from people who have to miss New Orleans. I’ve also had to change some travel arrangements, so I will miss the Friday evening meeting. I think some other folk have been talking to others, as well, not sure the numbers we would have if we all compared notes. Still, it is early days. I’m glad that my post didn’t start a big ruckus on the Biblical Studies group. And thanks again!

HEY ho! I’ve made a page with the THREE blogs I know of with the badge (well, its a start). I’ve linked my badge to the page, and if you could do the same, that would be great.

Once we get a bunch more signed up, we could think about a more permanent and independent home for the list.
