Interracial couples not welcome in Kentucky Church. Welcome to the past.

What freaking century is this?

Hat tip to Russell McCutcheon for noting this on Facebook:

Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church in Pike County, Kentucky has decided that in the interests of church “unity” that interracial couples are not welcome in most of its activities or as members. The Rawstory.com article says:

“Last Sunday, church members voted 9-6 in favor of [former pastor Melvin] Thompson’s proposed ban. Others attending the church business meeting declined to take a stand on the issue.”

“Parties of such marriages will not be received as members, nor will they be used in worship services and other church functions, with the exception being funerals.”

It all started when a nice white girl brought her black fiance to sing at the church while she played piano. How scandalous!

The ban on interracial couples attending church functions does not apply to funerals, though. No word yet if this actually applies to funerals for victims of lynchings.

Melvin Thompson and Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church, you are the JERKS OF THE DAY. Well done.

Jerks? You’re calling them jerks? You’re way, way too nice!

You are right. SOmetimes I can produce the profanity pretty profusely (and alliteratively) on this blog and other times I try to be more restrained. In this case, I probably got it wrong, and left the little fuckers off easy.

I’m actually quite surprised that they did not take the (somehow even more racist) step of making an exception for Ticha Chikuni as a recent immigrant from Africa. In the 1980s, I knew a biology researcher at MIT who had moved to the US from Nigeria some 5 years previous. He told me once that he had been invited to go to a church with the request to wear “traditional African clothing”, presumably so everyone would know that he was a distinguished visitor from abroad, and not one of them uppity local black folks trying to insinuate themselves into polite society.

I suppose gay Nazi marriages are out of the question. Sorry, about that silly comment but wow I honest to god thought that this kind of thing was stamped out last Century.

I hope that the appropriate anti-discrimination authorities throw the book (not the good book) at him.

    Cheers from Brisbane, Australia

I have a feeling they might be OK with hosting Nazi weddings, at least. Dividing humanity for the “unity” of the church just seems to have priorities all mixed up.

On February 12, 2012, Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church in Pike County, Kentucky, voted to limit their welcome of membership, to exclude people who consorted with prostitutes and non-patriots. They did this in order to preserve church unity. Too late they realized that they had excluded Jesus from membership, and He found a different church to attend. They have asked Him to come back, but He has refused until they have repented their ways. At this time, the church is holding out for a compromise, but Jesus is not budging from his demand of a complete repentance. There seems to be a stalemate.
