Why do your beliefs deserve respect? Just because you take them seriously? Big freaking deal. People get murdered because they offend your precious "messenger" and deity and you reinforce the murderers' obscene demands for censorship.

... but it still doesn't let Bush off the hook. We'll place him at the bottom.
///
''I don't know why you're talking about Sweden,'' Bush said. ''They're the neutral one. They don't have an army.''
Lantos paused, a little shocked, and offered a gentlemanly reply: ''Mr. President, you may have thought that I said Switzerland. They're the ones that are historically neutral, without an army.'' ...
Bush held to his view. ''No, no, it's Sweden that has no army.''

I just saw this entry now! Wonderful. And I agree with Mick's comment (well, the first part at least - I wasn't in Spokane so I don't know if it was fun. But I imagine if you were both there, it would have to have been!). Seven years since the last year I presented (but not the last year I attended) and I'm still telling people about the UofL Research in Religious Studies Conference and the impact it had on my confidence in my academic research, writing and presentation skills.

Plus, as an undergrad, it was incredibly inspiring (and yes, at times intimidating!), to see what other undergrads are capable of and interested in. It was also beneficial to see the type of work that masters-level students engage in, and engage them about it.

As you mentioned, Jim, there are some nerves involved in participating in something like this, especially in the mental build-up to a person's first conference presentation ever. Facing the questions after presenting was one of my biggest fears and I am so grateful for the learning space the conference provided in which to work through this fear. It was empowering when I realized it was a surmountable challenge to be asked a question that:
a) I didn't know the answer to, even though
b) it was in my area of interest, regarding some of my best work, and
c) was asked by a prof, in front of other profs and students and parents and academics!!
I still remember the liberating moment when I answered a question that had me stumped, saying (on a certain professor's coaching) "that wasn't my area of focus but it is a really good consideration and I'll look into it." (and I think I did look into it! That is another good thing about this conference - it can help you further develop your ideas, if you want it to)

Since graduating, I have noticed that the practice in proposing my ideas to people and addressing their inquiries about them has been an asset in work settings. Now that I'm back in school doing my MDiv, I continue to consider the conferences I participated in to have been a formative part of my academic abilities (and my confidence in them).

Of course, it was also nice to be able to put three years of participation in an undergrad/grad student research conference on my grad-school applications. :)

Anyway Jim, you didn't ask for them but those are my two-cents on the Research in Religious Studies Conference. I hope I've said it before, but either way it bears repeating: Thank you, the rest of the UofL Religious Studies department, and the University of Lethbridge for your commitment to this work!

Lately I've been seeing a lot of the "God Hates Fags" stuff, and a lot of the anti-athiest stuff around the media and unfortunately even from close people on my social media. Isn't it ironic how they think they're the supreme voice of god, and they declare what's right and what isn't, even if they have to use hate to promote it?
